The Tale of Lucius Livius

Lucius Livius was born a caesarean; he's a timid one. He and his mother lived in a small verdant garden, which remained despite its location in a deserted paint factory. When Lucius turned 12, his mother grew ill from the remaining fumes and died, leaving him alone in a dark, sadistic environment. But there's hope. He is told of a city, filled with golden lights. He must get there. He must try. He leaves with his mother’s ashes, which make the journey to the Golden City with him.

There are obstacles. Along the way he meets people both accommodating and terrifying. His trust in others becomes an abstract concept. He recursively encounters the Angry Ghost In The Machine, who stops at nothing preventing him from exiting the factory. But Lucius endures, in part because of his conviction that the ashes must be placed in the Golden City.

As he reaches the end of the factory, Lucius has a vivid dream. He encounters the Angry Ghost and comes to realize he’s known him his entire life. Lucius is seduced and very-nearly persuaded not to leave.

He awakes from the dream, brushes the dirt off of his shoulders and walks through the final door, into the real world; revealing the Golden City on a hill.
